As summer’s warmth gives way to the crisp embrace of fall in the high country, it’s the perfect moment to start planning your autumn adventure. The endless days of sunshine may be fading, but in their place comes a spectacular show of nature’s artistry—aspens ablaze with brilliant hues of gold and orange. Breckenridge and its surrounding landscapes transform into a vibrant canvas, making fall one of the most breathtaking seasons to explore. So, as you start dreaming up your getaway, be sure to add these must-see activities to your itinerary for an unforgettable experience.
Leaf Peeping
Experience the breathtaking transformation of aspen and cottonwood trees as they burst into vibrant hues of gold and orange from mid-September through the beginning of October. The sweeping colors across the landscape are truly spectacular and not to be missed. You can't miss the changing colors but here are some of our favorite spots.
-
- Hike Tenderfoot Trail in Silverthorne for a incredible view from the Gore Range to the Ten Mile range over Lake Dillon.
- Drive Independence Pass south of Breckenridge. This is about a 40 minute drive from the area but it’s worth it. You will drive through historic Leadville, and then you can choose to head north to Aspen and Snowmass to explore more of the Colorado west.
- Rent a pontoon boat on Lake Dillon. The Dillon and Frisco marinas are typically still open through September, don’t miss the chance to get out on the water, just remember to dress warmly!
- Rent a bike and ride along the Frisco Recreation Path through the canopy of trees from Frisco to Copper Mountain.
- Sapphire Point: this short and easy walk to the lookout will prove to give unbeatable views from Breckenridge to Frisco along Lake Dillon.
